The Republican nominee surprised supporters in campaign rally in North Carolina, when choosing to apologize for statements made during the campaign: “Sometimes, in the heat of debate, you don’t choose the right words. I will never tell you something I do not believe”.

That team includes Stephen Bannon, a combative conservative media executive with no presidential campaign experience, and pollster Kellyanne Conway, who has known Trump for years.

Clinton had no intention of letting Trump’s messages pass politely. “Donald” refers to Trump, and “ducks” is what Democrats say he’s doing when it comes to releasing his tax returns.

She has commercials on the air in the four states Trump is targeting plus Iowa, New Hampshire, Nebraska and Nevada.

The decision came during a critical week in the campaign, with Trump under pressure from Republican leaders and wealthy contributors to re-balance his candidacy after weeks of missteps that have left him trailing Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in national and battleground-state polls.

During the primary, Trump famously ran very few ads, spending only a sliver of what others spent.

Trump did not cite any examples of such remarks.

During an event Tuesday near Milwaukee, Trump spoke about the need for “law and order” and to challenge what he described as a corrupt political establishment, themes he also hit during his speech in Charlotte. “There was nobody in charge in the federal government, and there was nobody willing to take responsibility to work with state and local officials to make sure they were prepared”, she said at the time. Clinton issued a statement of support for the state but said that she did not want to distract from the relief effort by showing up.
