Donald Trump Considering Democratic Running Mate Who Backs Abortion Rights

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, considered a potential pick for Donald Trump’s running mate, insisted Monday that he is “pro-life” – clarifying his stance on abortion after riling conservatives by calling it a woman’s choice.

On Sunday during an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Flynn said, “Abortion, I think for women, these are hard issues”.

During his interview with “This Week”, Flynn garnered attention for his comments – which provoked ire from antiabortion-rights conservatives and ran contrary to past statements made by Trump on the issue.

“If a liberal Republican presidential nominee from NY selecting as a running mate a disgruntled former general, who once worked for his Democrat opponent, sounds familiar to you, it’s because it should”, he wrote.

When asked about Clinton’s email controversy earlier this year, Flynn shared: “If it were me, I would have been out the door and probably in jail”. A Republican-Democrat ticket for President of the United States may also cause Independents and Democrats to finally commit to voting for Donald Trump.

In August 2014, Flynn left his job at the Defense Intelligence Agency, allegedly after clashing with officials in the Obama White House. “But in the end, this platform is driven by grassroots Republican people throughout the nation who will represent the very values and principles of the Republican Party”. “If people are … concerned about this issue, they need to make sure they vote for Donald Trump so we can get the right Supreme Court justices in there to essentially change whatever needs to be changed”.

That would seem to lower the odds on the part-time Palm Beacher choosing from among New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, or someone else.

Like Trump, Flynn voices an unapologetic need to strike back at radical Islam and kick out anyone living in the US illegally.

Flynn said on Monday the country had deeper problems than social issues.

Update: AP quotes Trump saying his shortlist is now down to “four candidates that I think are terrific”.

A surprise name on the list is retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a national security adviser to Trump who has emerged as one of the most buzzed-about veep contenders, sources familiar with the deliberations said.

“I’m in one of these places where I deeply believe in this country”, he said.

According to the daily, Trump said he was prizing political experience over military experience for two main reasons.

Of course, Trump may not have been truly trying to get Flynn as a running mate. In March, dozens of members of the Republican national security community signed an open letter calling Trump’s vision for America “wildly inconsistent and unmoored in principle”.

“We really, we’re looking to go more the political route in terms of getting legislation passed, which is what they do”, he said.
