Donald Trump: Debate moderator Lester Holt shouldn’t point out errors of fact

So I don’t think you want that.

‘Well, I think he has to be a moderator, ‘ Trump responded without hesitation. I mean you’re debating somebody and if she makes a mistake or if I make a mistake, we’ll take each other on.

“I really don’t think you want that”.

Trump’s reference to Candy Crowley is particularly interesting. Beginning today, users Tweeting with either official debate hashtag – #debates or #debates2016 – will see a unique new Twitter emoji icon appear in their Tweets. When Romney said that Obama had not labeled the Benghazi attacks “an act of terror” in the immediate aftermath of the incident, Crowley gently pointed out to him that he was wrong to have made such an assumption. But, despite the snickering on Fox and Friends about this, Crowley was basically right: On the day after the attacks, Obama said: “no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation”.

Donald Trump issued a warning to Lester Holt ahead of the first presidential debate. The wrath of Romney supporters bore down on Crowley for days in the wake of this shocking transgression. “I think my questions were harder than her questions, if you want to know the truth, and a lot of pressure’s being put on Lester Holt”.

The debate will take place on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long Island; the event – which will mark not only the first Clinton v. Trump showdown but also the first debate featuring Trump and only one other person – will consist of six 15-minute segments.

NBC’s Matt Lauer has received criticism for not pointing out factual errors by Trump at a recent forum on national security. “That’s what they’re doing with Lester Holt…and a lot of people are watching to see whether he succumbs to that pressure”. NY state voter registration documents show Holt has been a registered Republican in the state since 2003.

Debate veterans say it’s best for the questioners to stay on the sidelines – and let the two candidates do the sparring themselves.

AINSLEY EARHARDT (CO-HOST): Her facts were inaccurate.

Trump has already made clear he would prefer that. And it really threw the debate off and it was unfair. He has good experience with that.
