Presidential campaigns, super PACs and other organizations typically use robocalls, tv ads and radio spots to drum up support for candidates.

Many more moderate Republicans believe both Cruz and Trump are damaging the Republican brand.

Despite all the attention to this issue in the last week, still only 46% of Iowa Republicans are aware that Cruz was not born in the United States.

Trump cited Harvard Law School professor Laurence H. Tribe who has said the legitimacy of Cruz’ citizenship is “unsettled”.

FILE – Republican U.S. presidential candidate businessman Donald Trump (L) speaks as Senator Ted Cruz (R) looks on during the Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dec. 15, 2015. He went further and said that the Texas senator would also cost the GOP its future.

Cruz was responding to an implicit comparison to Donald Trump’s immigration policy that would end birthright citizenship, build a massive wall and deport more than 11 million people in a 18- to 24-month time period, costing between $100 and $200 billion, The Huffington Post reported.

A Cruz aide, earlier in the day, denied to NBC News that the line of attack has hurt the candidate, saying of the charge “We haven’t seen any evidence it’s resonating”. Others, particularly some of Mr. Cruz’s GOP rivals for president, say it’s still an open question.

This doesn’t mean Cruz will lose in Iowa – though Trump has regained the lead there according to new polls out Monday – and it doesn’t mean that the Cruz birther issue will have legs.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday”, Trump rejected claims that he was “trolling” Cruz. “He’s done the due diligence of raising money to be in this race for the long haul”, said Rep. Tom Rooney, a Florida Republican who was the first member of Congress to endorse Rubio’s presidential bid. “Support Donald Trump. I paid for this through the super PAC”, before saying the number to call, and adding, “This call is not authorized by Donald Trump”.

“It’s not ‘live coddled by a bunch of nanny-state liberals who want to control every aspect of your life, or die, ‘” he said to laughs and cheers outside a gun range. Trump drew the analogy during a campaign speech to more than 3,000 people in downtown Reno on Sunday while casino sportsbooks were jammed with fans across the street watching the National Football League playoffs. Still, Cruz has recently been a favorite to win the Hawkeye State, thanks to support among tea party backers and evangelical Christians.
