Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg delivers remarks on the third day of the Democratic National Convention.
“Little” Michael Bloomberg, who never had the guts to run for president, knows nothing about me.
President Obama was the closer Wednesday night, and he executed the job flawlessly, contrasting Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in a way that you would hope won over even the peacenik meatheads who had heckled former CIA Director Leon Panetta earlier.
Bloomberg, the fellow NY businessman who nearly threw his hat in the ring for the presidency in 2016, slammed Trump’s business practices and argued they would be risky to the United States economy. “I know Hillary Clinton’s not flawless – no candidate is – but she is the right choice – and the responsible choice – in the election”.
“Let’s elect a sane, competent person”, Bloomberg said.
“I understand the appeal of a businessman president”, Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg’s scathing speech seemed created to chafe Trump’s rawest nerves, mocking Trump’s business prowess, his inheritance from his late father, his ego and his intellect.
Michael Bloomberg at a news conference at the COP21 climate summit in Paris, on December 4, 2015. I couldn’t agree more. “The richest thing about Donald Trump is his hypocrisy … he wants you to believe we can solve our biggest problems by deporting Mexicans and keeping out Muslims … he’s wrong … we can only solve our biggest problems is we come together”, said the progressive billionaire.
Bloomberg said he often encourages business leaders like himself to run for office.
The self-made media mogul – one of the wealthiest men in the world – was elected to City Hall as a Republican but became an independent during his second of three terms.
His speech tonight at the Democratic Convention addressed the more moderate part of the party and the old-school Republicans who are still reluctant to vote for Trump.

On Wednesday, they had the same effect for Bloomberg among Democrats as they have had for Trump among Republicans: Applause and raucous laughter. Trump says he’ll punish manufacturers that move to Mexico or China, but the clothes he sells are made overseas in low-wage factories. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Clinton’s primary challenger.
