Donald Trump pops into golf tournament at his Doral resort

Scott carded a closing 69 which which featured two double bogeys in the space of three holes, a shank and seven birdies to finish 12 under par at Doral, one shot ahead of double Masters champion Bubba Watson.

Meanwhile, world number one Jordan Spieth posted a one-over-par 73 to be 10 shots off the pace.

“Everything fell the right way for me today, especially on 18 for that ball to stay up”, said Scott.

There was drama for Scott on the last when his second shot finished inside the hazard line but not in the water, and he had to get up and down, sinking a six-foot putt to take the crown.

Scott is the first person to win in consecutive weeks since Billy Horschel won the BMW Championship and The Tour Championship by Coca-Cola in 2014.

He also avoided a disaster after two double bogeys on the front nine (holes three and five) and instead rallied to finish six-under on his remaining 13 holes.

Sunday marked the final day that the Cadillac Championship at Trump National will be played under its existing sponsorship agreement, and neither Trump nor the PGA Tour can say with any degree of certainty that a World Golf Championships event – or even a regular tour stop – will be back in 2017.

“I’ve used my experience to my advantage the last couple of weeks”, said Scott. “It was such a challenge out there today. By the time I had made the turn, I had made a couple birdies, and Rory had dropped a shot and I thought with a great back nine I was in with a chance, and what’s that I tried to do”.

However, the 35-year-old bounced back with birdies on the sixth and eighth and started the back nine with three more in succession, before another on the 14th took him into a two-shot lead. He said at last year’s TOUR Championship that the $10 million FedExCup prize, the biggest windfall in the game, was an “amount of money doesn’t sort of mean much to me anymore”. “What I’m working on in my head is working out”.

“I just played a really solid round of golf”, he told the Golf Channel after getting up and down from a greenside bunker to save par at the last hole.

He grabbed his only birdie of the day at the short par four 16th and eventually finished the tournament, tied for third, two shots behind Scott.

McIlroy’s frequent visits to the sand cost him another shot at the ninth, and another shot went at 13 before he gave himself an outside shot at the title with a nice up-and-down from sand for his lone birdie of the day at 16.

“There’s 18 holes to negotiate out there tomorrow, and hopefully I will join that illustrious company tomorrow night”.

“I shot 37 over par and still made a paycheck”.

Over the last two days, McIlroy has loved the results. “And I just couldn’t get a putt to go in. I’m going to push hard the next few weeks”.

“It was a split on the decision so they called the USGA and he said that the USGA was going to talk about it further, but for now we’re going to rule that you can not do it”. “I don’t know if there’s going to be an extension or not, but I would imagine you could get another sponsor pretty easily in South Florida”. I can’t believe I have won back to back and to win a WGC is huge.
