Donald Trump’s family in the spotlight as he is nominated for president

“Now they are stalled on the ground floor”, Trump, Jr. said Tuesday night in Cleveland, delivering one of the keynote speeches of the day at the Republican National Convention. While he only mentioned Mr Trump’s name twice in his speech, he gave his full-throated backing last night to the businessman.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a former federal prosecutor, laid out an aggressive case against Clinton, asking the crowd to weigh in on her leadership on the Islamic State group, China, and an al-Qaida-linked group in Nigeria.

Donald Trump was officially declared the Republican presidential candidate on Wednesday at the party’s national convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

After the roll call, Clinton tweeted a fundraising appeal: “Donald Trump just became the Republican nominee”.

The evening’s programme ended on an unusual note, with an actress-turned-avocado farmer delivering the closing speech – a spot normally reserved for prominent speakers. Now I’m not really a Trump supporter, but I thought she did a real good job for someone who is not used to it.

Two of Mr Trump’s children testified to his character, casting him as a man undeterred by challenges.

Donald Trump Jr., his eldest son and an executive vice president at The Trump Organization, cited his father’s business acumen and said his father approaches business projects the same way he has approached his campaign and life in general.

So who is the latest member of the Trump family to address the convention?

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect”.

For some Republicans, the night also offered a glimpse of what could have been.

It’s arguable, to say the least, how effective Newt Gingrich will be as a surrogate who can soften Trump’s edges to female voters or broaden his appeal in swing states.

The crowd gathered in the cavernous convention hall reflected the growing dissatisfaction among some Republicans with party elites. The former Senate majority leader was badly wounded in the war, losing the ability to freely move his right hand and arm.

The boisterous roll call featured officials bragging about their states, per tradition, and enthusiastically declaring Trump the victor of their delegates.

At the Republican National Convention in the USA city of Cleveland on Tuesday night, where Mr Trump’s presumed nomination was locked in, Tiffany took to the stage after a mock trial led by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

Announcing that Trump’s home state of NY had cast the deciding vote, Trump Jr. enthused: “It’s not a campaign anymore, it’s a movement”.

Party officials are hoping to use the convention to smooth out some of Trump’s rough edges and present him as a job creator and a strong hand to combat security threats at home and overseas.

Melania Trump was praised for making progress in highlighting her husband’s personal qualities during her Monday night address. Nor has it identified the person responsible for inserting the lines into the speech that echoed those of Michelle Obama’s address to the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

In an extended interview with CNN on Tuesday, Dole said he wished his friends were here with him, but he doesn’t fault some of them for refusing to come.

Still, the plagiarism controversy and other unforced errors by the campaign cast a shadow over the convention and raised fresh questions about Trump’s oversight of his campaign, which gives voters a window into how a candidate might handle the pressures of the presidency.

Clinton pounced on the tumult, saying the Republican gathering had so far been “surreal”, comparing it to the classic fantasy film “Wizard of Oz”.
