Newspaper columnists in Mexico have reported Videgaray was behind last week’s visit, after which Pena Nieto was criticized for not being forceful enough in rejecting Trump’s proposals and comments about Mexico.

Finance Secretary Luis Videgaray, one of Pena Nieto’s closest advisers and confidants, resigned Wednesday in a move seen as linked to Trump’s visit.
But on Thursday, Trump lamented Videgaray’s resignation.

The controversial meeting is dogging a president whose approval ratings have plummeted, with the economy underperforming, drug violence claiming more lives every day and a report last month that he had plagiarized parts of his law school thesis.
Pena Nieto came under fire for not being hard on Trump during a joint news conference and failing to challenge him when the NY billionaire said they had not discussed the wall during their meeting.
But some analysts interpreted it as the latest, and most dramatic, effort by the president to regain the trust of the Mexican public following his meeting with Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, who has made criticism of Mexicans and Mexico an incendiary motif of his campaign.
But within hours of departing the country, Trump was telling a cheering crowd of supporters in Phoenix, Arizona, that Mexico would pay for the border wall “100 percent”, prompting fresh ridicule of Pena Nieto at home. Meade “is the best politician we have in Mexico right now and if anybody was going to be put in such a critical situation, he would be the best choice”.
The US ambassador to Mexico, Roberta Jacobson, said Thursday that the two countries may go through some “rough times”, but relations will get back on track.
“So I tend to not “catastrophize” even some of the things that are happening in this election”, she said at a forum in Mexico City.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, also invited to visit by Pena Nieto, said this week that she won’t be coming to Mexico before Election Day.
Trump, the Republican nominee for the USA presidency, visited Mexico briefly on 1 September, despite widespread condemnation of some of his earlier comments about Mexican migrants to the United States.
Trump has cast his visit to Mexico as a statesmanlike effort to reach out to a country he had alienated. I let them know where the United States stands.
