He was also still refusing to say that Mr Obama had been born in Hawaii when questioned on the issue during a Washington Post interview on Thursday. It was outrageous and insulting, but at this point with Donald Trump, was it at all a surprise?

However, that assertion was itself cast into doubt when former McClatchy D.C. Bureau Chief James Asher tweeted that long-time Clinton confidante Sidney Blumenthal had encouraged him to investigate the rumor that Obama was not born in America. Do they believe Trump?

In today’s back-and-forth match between the GOP nominees and a worn-down news media, suddenly it’s Advantage Trump. “I finished it”, Trump said at his new hotel in Washington yesterday. He doesn’t have a birth certificate.

Trump responded: “Well, a lot of people don’t agree with you and a lot of people feel it wasn’t a proper certificate”.

She said Trump owes Obama an “apology”. “Your reaction?”, a journalist asked.

Then he paused and smirked. “Well, I’m not that shocked actually – it’s fairly typical”. “We got other business to attend to”.

The president added: “I was pretty confident about where I was born”.

Regardless of whether or not the issue was raised back in 2008, it doesn’t negate the fact that Trump has unapologetically pushed the lie for more than half a decade.
