Donald Trump says: “I’m with you”

In his nomination acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Trump said that “there can be no prosperity without law and order” while stating that “in this race for the White House, I am the law and order candidate”.

“America is better than Donald Trump”, Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, various news outlets reported a leak of Trump’s nomination speech. Referring to comments made by Clinton’s chief rival in the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders, Trump charged, “Her bad instincts and her bad judgment are what caused numerous disasters unfolding today”.

“I don’t think he speaks for most Americans, do you?”

“I think perhaps bringing that kind of outsider blood to Washington, apart from lifelong politicians, could be what our country needs to break free from small growth and move toward high growth”, said Noah Lewis of San Francisco.

“I am your voice”, Trump said.

He had been introduced by his eldest daughter Ivanka, who spoke about his work with women and minorities in a bid to reach out to groups Mr Trump has struggled to win over.

“As a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said”, he responded. Clinton also paid her respects at a memorial for the 49 people who were killed in the attack. Trump’s speech may have hit on a message that could propel him to the presidency. “Beginning on January 20, 2017, safety will be restored”, according to speech excerpts released by his campaign.

The apparent omission appeared to irritate some delegates however who chanted “we want Trump” as he delivered his address and booed him as he walked off the stage for apparently not endorsing his party’s nominee.

“The American people will come first once again”, he said.

Ivanka, who has worked alongside her father for more than 10 years, said he is “color blind and gender neutral” when it comes to his businesses.

Later, he said: “I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves”.

Instead of reaching for inspirational vignettes most nominees use to inspire their nation to greatness, Trump dwelled on the relatives of those killed by undocumented migrants and depicted a violent and unsafe land.

“I love the media”, Trump joked. Even if you disagree, like I do, it was the most convincing defense of Trump’s readiness and ability to perform the job.

While Trump in past months has proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States, he said Thursday the suspension would apply only to immigrants “from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism”.
