Donald Trump Says US Should ‘Seriously’ Consider Profiling Muslims

“I think profiling is something that we’re going to have to start thinking about as a country”, Trump said on CBS’ “Face the Nation”.

“You look at Israel and you look at others, and they do it and they do it successfully. And I hate the concept of profiling but we have to start using common sense and we have to use our heads”, he argued. Trump also alleged that French authorities are monitoring mosques across their country, and said the USA should “respectfully” do the same.

“This man was pretty much unhinged”, Mr. Trump said of Omar Mateen, the terrorist gunman who killed 49 people in a June 12 attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

Mateen’s motive isn’t clear, but a letter from the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Republican Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, said Mateen wrote on Facebook that “real muslims will never accept the filthy ways of the west”.

He has also called for a suspension of immigration from countries with “a proven history of terrorism”.

The NYPD, under Mayor Bill de Blasio, announced it had abandoned the program following lawsuits and complaints.

“When you look at, when you look at people within the Muslim community and where people are living and they don’t report, and a good example of that would be San Bernardino”, he said.

His increasing embrace of policies that could isolate Muslims in America is extraordinary for a candidate assured of his party’s presidential nomination. But after the Orlando massacre, he has doubled down on the idea, earning him criticism from fellow Republicans, including House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (Wis.).

Trump says that in the age of global terrorism, it’s a matter of choosing “common sense” over “political correctness”.

Profiling is the government practice of targeting people for investigation based factors such as their race, religion or nationality.

Earlier, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in an interview on CNN that the gun store owner did not have information to identify Mateen because he did not make a purchase.
