The blistering letter, made public Monday afternoon, warns Mr. Trump would be the “most reckless president in American history”. “That said, I think it’s unlikely to influence many voters, but it could give cover to Republican members of Congress and donors who want to cut the cord and move on from Trump”.
Senator Ted Cruz, who was defeated by Trump in the primary race, had urged conservatives to “vote your conscience” at the Republican national convention.
Two Republican representatives, Virginia’s Scott Rigell and New York’s Richard Hanna, have publicly rejected Trump in the past week. “I revere the history of my party, most particularly the value it has always placed on the worth and dignity of the individual, and I will continue to work across the country for Republican candidates”, she said.
Hillary Clinton offered a direct rebuttal to Trump’s remarks during a rally in St. Petersburg, Florida, later in the day.
Other Republican senators put in hard positions by Trump include John McCain, running for re-election in an increasingly Hispanic Arizona, and Kelly Ayotte, running for re-election in moderate New Hampshire.
A group called the Michigan People’s Campaign took credit for the protests, which they said were aimed at Trump’s recent comments about sexual harassment.
“Three incidents in particular have led me to the inescapable conclusion that Trump lacks the temperament, self-discipline and judgement required to be President”, she wrote. John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five years, and insulted Fox News host Megyn Kelly in a debate a year ago. “And once again, he proved incapable of apologizing, of saying he was wrong”.
“I am also deeply concerned that Mr. Trump’s lack of self-restraint and his barrage of ill-informed comments would make an already perilous world even more so”, Collins wrote in the op-ed.
Donald Trump sought to get his stumbling campaign back on track Monday, unveiling a tax reform plan aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan’s policy agenda.
Reporter: The Republican establishment is nervous that Trump’s candidacy will hurt them in Congressional elections.
Speaking at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump laid out proposals to achieve an American “economic renewal”, including a moratorium on government regulations, a proposal to make childcare expenses fully tax deductible, and other proposals his campaign argued will benefit the middle class. She also stressed her commitment to small businesses, asking “would you rather have a president who says you’re fired or you’re hired?”

She maintained that she will help campaign for other Republicans, but not Trump.
