In a tweet, the Republican presidential candidate said he has told his lawyers not to sue “for now”, but threatened that they are “watching”.

Whatever questions Dowd had about the realness of Trump’s candidacy from the start (she wrote at one point he “lives beyond parody”), she did interview him early on and did give him credit for the showmanship he displayed in going up against political insiders.

The New York real estate developer did not say why he was upset with the paper but he has accused it on numerous occasions of favouring Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Dowd replied that yes, she has had conversations with Trump where she has raised concern about aspects of his campaign.

“I told him that it was wrong that there was violence being incited at his rallies and that reporters were getting roughed up”, Dowd told CNN, before adding, “He disagreed and said he thought the violence added a frisson of excitement”.

The New York billionaire had previously attacked the Times on Twitter “as a laughingstock rag” and called Maureen Dowd, a columnist for the Times, “wacky” and “a neurotic dope”.
