Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are also on the list of potential VPs.
Gingrich was full of praise for Pence and said he could be a “stabilizing force” for Republicans who are “jittery” about Trump. In subsequent interviews with other media outlets Ginsburg said Trump is a “faker” who “really has an ego”. Jeff Sessions and former House speaker Newt Gingrich.
Meanwhile, Fox News announced Tuesday that Gingrich had agreed to stop being a network contributor because of speculation he might join Trump’s ticket.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee posted the news on Twitter Wednesday night, adding, “Details to follow”.
Sources familiar with campaign operations cautioned that while Pence and Gingrich were finalists, Trump could always have a last-minute change of heart and choose someone else from his short list.
Tony Zirkle, an attorney from Crown Point, Ind., who was at the rally Tuesday, said he liked Pence but that Trump might see his social conservatism as a liability. Mr Christie, a one-time rival, has become one of Mr Trump’s most trusted advisers.
Donald Trump is expected to raise more than $1 million in campaign fundraising at an invite-only event at Chicago’s Trump Tower Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Trump held a rally in Westfield, Indiana, where Governor Mike Pence introduced him. Trump told the crowd, referring to Pence. Pence’s speech appeared to be an effort from the former congressman to show Trump he could take on such a role.
“I don’t know if he’s going to be your governor or your vice president, who the hell knows!”
If Trump settled on Pence, both Gingrich and Christie would likely end up with senior positions in a Trump administration. Their governing experience and popularity among the party’s conservative base would mark a sharp contrast to Trump, whose brand of politics has alienated hard-line conservatives and establishment Republicans alike.
“I’m honored to be considered and humbled to be considered”, Pence told reporters Wednesday.
Perkins noted that Trump’s selection of a running mate is critical if the presumptive GOP nominee wants to secure the full backing of the conservative movement. He’s a communicator. He gets the message, he stays on messages.
