The campaign also got a bit more nuclear between Cruz and Sen.

“I think he’s a master at manipulation and I find it amusing at one level that he constantly attacks me”.

A new SC poll of Republicans, by local newspaper The State and Public Policy Polling, showed Mr Trump as the runaway leader with 35 per cent support, followed by Mr Cruz on 18 per cent. Mr Bush is in fifth place with 7 per cent.

Trump said Tuesday his issue with Cruz is what he sees as his dishonesty. “He’ll be a strong and steady hand when confronted with the unexpected”, Bush said of his brother, who is seeking a boost to his fortunes in SC, which on Saturday becomes the third state to vote in the presidential nominating contest leading up to the November election.

Republican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign town hall meeting in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina February 15, 2016.

According to the poll, 38 percent of Trump voters said they wish the South had won the Civil War to only 24 percent who were glad the North had won while 38 percent of his supporters weren’t sure.

Jeb jumped in to defend his brother, telling the crowd, “If I closed my eyes, I thought it was Michael Moore on the stage”, referring to the director of the 2004 documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, which condemned the Bush administration’s actions in Iraq. The GOP presidential candidate said his rival is a totally “unstable” individual and the “biggest liar he has ever came across”.

“If he doesn’t take down his false ads and retract his lies, I will do so immediately”, he said.

It was a reminder of how much the Republican Party has changed since he was president. The former president campaigned with his brother in the state on Monday.

Asked about Cruz calling him “rattled”, Trump said, “He doesn’t mean that”.

“I’ve got two tours to Iraq, and I’m a Richmond County deputy”, he said with a smile as the audience erupted into a thunderous applause and Trump offered his signature thumbs up gesture. Trump has also repeatedly reminded voters that the September 11, 2001, terror attacks happened on Bush’s watch. He kept us safe? “But I’ve never had somebody take something that you believe in and just say the exact opposite”. On the way to Air Force One from that school, Condi [Condoleezza Rice] called me and said a plane had hit the Pentagon.
