Donald Trumps Competition in South Carolina Republican Primary

Marco Rubio’s stronger-than-expected second place finish will excite loyalists, and there will be a strong push to try to ensure that he mops up votes from the rest of the field. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio was too close to call.

Clinton’s win means she will pick up at least 19 of Nevada’s 35 delegates.

Supporters for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump hold signs during a South Carolina Republican primary night event on Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.

A poor showing for former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who was running in a distant fourth place, could mark the end of the Bush campaign and an end to his dreams of becoming a third Bush president after his father and brother.

“I’m proud of the campaign that we’ve run to unify our country and to advocate conservative solutions”, Bush said.

“Trump, whose candidacy was dismissed by many last summer, said the Republican nomination is now within his grasp after his victory in the SC primary”.

In the past six GOP primaries without an incumbent, New Hampshire and SC have been won by the same candidate three times-and all three went on to win the nomination.

There were different fortunes for frontrunner Donald Trump who coasted to victory in SC.

SC this week felt like it was do or die for Bush, and indeed it was. Rubio and Bush were both largely considered mainstream conservatives, but Trump argued that he would continue to earn support as candidates leave the race. “These geniuses … they don’t understand, as people drop out I’ll get a lot of those votes”.

His South Carolina finish doesn’t enhance his chances, but neither did it deal his prospects a fatal blow.

The survey also found that three-quarters of voters supported a temporary ban on Muslims who are not US citizens from entering the country – one of Trump’s policies.

“It is not just one but two branches of government that are at stake”, he said.

This is Trump’s second win of the campaign.

Mr Trump’s supporters erupted into cheers as they learned their candidate had won in SC. Then he finished fifth in New Hampshire.

“I don’t like politicians”, said Jim Jaruszewicz, a 37-year-old radiology technician who voted for Trump.

Clinton captured the backing of voters who said electability and experience were important in their vote. Beyond that, the Super Tuesday contests on March 1 loom large as 12 states will cast their ballots for their preferred nominees.
