The family of Michael Keating – the 10-year-old boy with cerebral palsy Pope Francis blessed in Philadelphia last month – has raised more than $114,000 through crowdfunding for his care. “It’s overwhelming, but it’s just incredible”, Chuck Keating said. “I’m so blown away”.
Kristin and Chuck Keating, of Caernarvon Township, Berks County, the parents of 10-year-old Michael, thought maybe donations from the online fund-raiser that relatives started could be the down payment on a new van, one with a working lift for their son. Kristin has had two hernia surgeries as a result. The van will cost at least $50,000 and anything left over will go to upgrading the ramps and bathrooms around the house to make them more accessible to Michael.
Ms Keating said her son had been anxious before the visit of Pope Francis but was calmed in his presence. We hope you feel our prayers, especially those in thanksgiving for each of your courageous lives…Thank you with all our hearts for being examples of Jesus’s mercy and love.
“God bless Michael and your wonderful family!”
Michael’s special blessing, though, was a complete surprise.

“He immediately waved his hand as if to stop the vehicle, which it did, got right out and came over to us”, Kristin told NBC News.
