Donations still pouring in for Odisha’s Dana Majhi
After the incident that sparked an outrage and pushed him into limelight, Majhi’s three daughters are being provided free education by Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) at its residential school here. But Majhi said that he failed to get any assistance despite his repeated efforts to get some help from the hospital authorities.

WEEKS AFTER his photograph, carrying his dead wife on his shoulders, made national headlines, Dana Majhi, a tribal farmer from Kalahandi, appeared in another photograph today – holding a cheque of Rs 8.9 lakh, as promised by Bahrain Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.
Dana Manjhi told reporters that he would deposit the money in the bank and use it to secure the future of his three daughters. “I hope they get good education and jobs”, said Majhi, after catching an Air India flight to Bhubaneswar in the evening.
Majhi was forced to walk for miles along with his 12-year-old daughter as he had failed to get a vehicle to transport it from a government hospital in the backward district of Kalahandi where she died. Now however along with the Bahraini monarch’s donation, Dana has also received another Rs. 9 Lakh from various organisations. Speaking to ET, on the phone of one his new mentors who escorted him to Delhi, he said he thought he had been given nine lakhs earlier.
Manjhi finally collected his cheque from Bahrain Embassy in Delhi on Thursday. He is now a near celebrity and while sitting in the lounge of a posh hotel in Delhi he was reported to have said,”I pleaded but none listened to me then.Life was harsh”.

Samanta made a decision to take responsibility for the education of Maji’s three daughters (Chandini-12, Chauli-10 and seven- year-old Sonai) education after many tribal organisations in Kalahandi district sought his assistance. The district administration offered Rs 30,000 and a sack of rice, a philanthropist in Maharashtra sent Rs 80,000, and a sum of Rs 75,000 was released under the Indira Awas Yojana.
