Scott, a nine-time Irish champion, has now beaten the previous record that was held by New Zealender’s Don King by a solitary lamb.

There was just a hair’s breadth between them as Scott beat King’s record by just one lamb.

Shearing at the same venue on Tuesday, and becoming the first person to attempt a World shearing record in the Northern Hemisphere, New Zealand shearer Matt Smith broke the nine-hours ewe shearing record which had also stood since 2007.

He sheared 867 lambs in England today under the watchful eyes of shearing judges to ensure that all shearing satisfied a quality standard and that each lamb had at least 3kg of wool.

In April this year he shore a single sheep in 37.9 seconds in a live-televised Guinness Book of Records record attempt.

The Donegal man has already set two sheep shearing related records this year.

His biggest tally was 878 shorn in nine hours at work, in New Zealand, without judges or the pressure of shearing alone in front of a crowd.

Having worked in New Zealand most summers since 2000, Scott has been employed mainly by Rotorua contractor Jeff Dorset, who flew to the United Kingdom to manage the record bid.
