The single-player campaign is expected to cover a wide area of locales from a Victorian mansion and ghost towns to pirate galleons.

To create BLACKROOM, Romero has teamed up with id Software co-founder Adrian Carmack, who will head up art direction.

Blackroom is described as a “visceral, varied and violent shooter that harkens back to classic FPS play with a mixture of exploration, speed, and intense, weaponised combat”. His new studio, Night Work, is based in Ireland – where Romero now resides – and is described as “the dark and violent subsidiary of Romero Games Ltd”.

John Romero and Adrian Carmack promised an unveiling for April 25 and an unveiling is what we’ve got.

Features new soundtrack compositions by acclaimed metal guitarist George Lynch.

The game promises full mod support and dedicated servers when it launches in the winter of 2018 on PC. It’s the type of shooter we’re known for, and the type of game we love to play ourselves.

The basic premised of Blackroom is simple enough – holographic simulations, indistinguishable from reality, are projected inside of a giant black room. But when the company’s new predictive memory technology begins to merge with the blackroom in unsafe ways, it will be up to Sonora to survive the simulation as what is real and what is fake begin to blend together. The idea of a shooter is running around with weapons, in first-person, blowing things away. “Peering into your mind and tapping into your deepest memories and fears, however, it’s clear that the BLACKROOM™ is not all fun and games”. They’re now partnered up and banking on the name recognition their involvement brings to propel a freshly launched Kickstarter campaign. Romero in particular is credited as the director of 1996’s Quake and having co-designed two of the most influential and iconic shooters in gaming history; 1993’s Doom and 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D. The minimum goal is a relatively modest $700,000 (£480,000) in 32 days.
