‘Dory’ sinks ‘Independence Day’ with $73.2M at weekend box office
Though the 4th of July weekend is less than a week away, Finding Dory continues to launch fireworks at the box office, sitting pretty as the top domestic earner for a second week while almost doubling Independence Day: Resurgence’s $41.6 million debut.

“Resurgence” faltered in its first weekend of release scoring a disappointing $41.6 million.
The Civil War drama “Free State of Jones” had a dismal opening. The Independence Day sequel failed to live up to its 90s hype and underperformed domestically, while the open water survival film performed much better than anticipated.
Judd Hirsch, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman arrive at the premiere of the film “Independence Day: Resurgence” in Hollywood, California, June 20, 2016.
It’s a good sign for “Resurgence’s” profitability, with 11 more markets opening the film next weekend. In the meantime, the worldwide haul for Central Intelligence does seem likely to be profitable, as the well-regarded comedy brought in an estimated $18.4 million for its second week.
“We talk about sequel-itis, which may or may not be an actual affliction, but certainly of these many sequels released this summer and this year, the winners have been the rarity”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. The CIA caper starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart has now earned $69.3 million in 10 days – trailing Johnson’s surprise hit San Andreas last summer (which made $98.5 million in two weeks), but coming in higher than Hart’s Ride Along 2 ($58.6 million) earlier this year.
Other films also had solid overseas numbers, including “Now You See Me 2”, which opened in China over the weekend. Playing in 783 theaters, it made just under $607,000.
