Downing of Russian plane saddens Erdogan

Senior Russian officials have called the episode, one of the most serious publicly acknowledged clashes between a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member country and Russia for half a century, a pre-planned provocation.

But U.S. officials have constantly expressed that the coalition and the Russians are not coordinating or cooperating operations in Syria.

But they are on opposing sides in the Syrian conflict, with Ankara backing rebels fighting to topple Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad while Moscow is one of his last remaining allies.

It has sparked sanctions between both countries, decimating trade deals and restricting travel between the two nations.

Earlier Saturday, Turkey issued a travel warning urging its nationals to delay non-urgent and unnecessary travel to Russian Federation.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Friday sought to ease tensions with Moscow, calling for unity against the Islamic State group and arguing the shooting of the plane was not an act against Russian Federation.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Saturday said it is preparing travel alert for citizens willing to go to Russian Federation.

Tuesday’s downing of a Sukhoi 24 jet on the border with Syria has caused a crisis in bilateral relations.

The government is expected to publish the list of banned imports on Monday, Interfax news agency reported, citing a government source.

As Russia is important for Turkey, Turkey is important for Russia.

“Russia is quite concerned with increasing terrorist threats in the Republic of Turkey”, Lavrov added, after a spate of bloody attacks blamed on IS extremists there.

However, his comments fell short of the apology Moscow has demanded.

Furthermore, certain types of goods from the Turkish republic will be subject to “bans or limitations”. That could impact contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

His body was flown from the border to the Turkish capital Ankara on Saturday afternoon, from where it will be taken to Moscow.

Turkish forces shot down the plane saying it had violated Turkish airspace, which Russian Federation denies.

Mr Erdogan said: “We are truly saddened by this incident”.

Putin has accused Ankara of a “planned provocation”, and a “stab in the back”.

Russia and Turkey have fiercely disagreed on the circumstances surrounding the shooting down of the Russian SU-24 fighter jet on Tuesday. The Russian military also has moved the missile cruiser Moskva closer to the shore to help cover Russian bombers on combat missions.
