Downton Abbey beats EastEnders in Christmas Day ratings war
The first Downton Abbey Christmas special in 2011 drew an average United Kingdom overnight audience of 8.6 million and a peak audience of 9.1 million, which rose to 12.1 million in the consolidated viewer figures, followed by 6.8 million in 2012 and 6.6 million in 2013.

Speaking about her time on the show, she said: “We’ve made friends for life, you know Laura [Carmichael] and I are not anxious about not seeing each other because we live very close by one another, we see each other all the time”.
But the Queen’s speech, broadcast on BBC and ITV, was the most watched programme, with a combined audience of 7.2 million. “Nobody regrets ending when we did”, he shared. He revealed, “We easily could have gone for a 7th season, but if I’d have said “We haven’t got Maggie” it would have been a shadow of itself”.
Downton Abbey debuted on ITV in 2010 and became a global phenomenon, collecting numerous awards along the way.
He tells The Sun newspaper, “Production were checking our pockets (to make sure) that we weren’t stealing anything!”
“I’m glad about the movie question because it replaces the question of three years which was always, “When is the show going to end?”
Christmas telly proved a turn off this year as shows recorded some of the worst festive numbers ever.
The final episode started at 8:45 p.m. and ran for two hours.
“The world is a different place from the way it was, my lord, and Downton Abbey must change with it”, Carson replies.
We’ve been on lots of red carpets together and to the Met Ball a couple of times, which was incredible and surreal because all these really famous people, like Mick Jagger, Bruno Mars, Marc Jacobs and P Diddy, were coming up and talking to us.
