Downton Abbey boss reveals the show ended because Dame Maggie Smith quit
Christmas Day marks the end of an era, and sees the last ever episode of Downton Abbey air.

The consolidated audience figures, including catch-up viewing, will be higher.
This has never been an ideal arrangement, but the people in charge of Downton Abbey managed to make things work for them and fans of the show.
The Sun reported that executive producer Gareth Neame said the show would struggle to continue without Lady Violet Crawley actress Dame Maggie so a decision had been made to call time on the ITV hit. ITV bid a fond farewell to the beloved drama on Christmas eve in an epic two hour special.
“It feels extraordinary; we remember the first day we were ever here, and now here we are on this handsome sunny day”.
“We easily could have gone for a seventh season but if I’d have said “We haven’t got Maggie”, it would have been a shadow of itself”, he told the newspaper.
But the Queen’s speech, broadcast on BBC and ITV, was the most watched programme of the day, with a combined audience of 7.2 million.

Downton Abbey actor Jim Carter has warned fans to buy a box of tissues ahead of the show’s Christmas Day special. “I think it would be interesting to know how many people are on their second screens or how many have got their tablets on”.
“The world is a different place from the way it was, my lord, and Downton Abbey must change with it”, Carson replies.
The emotional farewell to one of the decades most popular television programme’s will be shown at 8.45pm on ITV1.

Earlier on in the day, Christmas movie courageous had 5.5 million viewers on BBC One in the afternoon and animated short Stick Man was seen by 6.3 million.
