“Downton Abbey” finale aired on Christmas Day

Only Fools And Horses also holds third place, with an audience of 21.31 million for the episode on Christmas Day 1996. Many homes also have more than one screen or people tend to download programmes or watch them after they have been screened on catch-up services.

The Christmas Day TV ratings battle looks set to be another cracker.

Guests will get a sneak peek at the first hour of episode one before anyone else.

An individual episode of a soap opera has not topped the Christmas ratings chart for more than 30 years.

An average overnight audience of 8.6 million viewers, including those time-shifting on ITV +1, watched as Matthew Crawley (played by Dan Stevens) proposed to Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) four years ago, according to the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (Barb).
