‘Downton Abbey’ star Maggie Smith responds to Jimmy Kimmel Emmy jokes
The cast and crew of “Game of Thrones” winners of the award for outstanding drama series pose in the press room at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The Emmys are just not her cup of tea.
“I think that “Veep” has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”, she said as she accepted her award. That was gag material for Kimmel, who said her trophy would be in the “lost and found”.
“If Mr Kimmel could please direct me to the lost and found office, I will try and be on the next flight”, the actor wrote, undersigning the note as Old Maggie.
ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel hosted Sunday’s Emmys, as he did in 2012, the last time they aired on the network.
Kimmel pointed out to the audience that Smith had shown up to collect her two Academy Awards, for The Prime Of Miss Brodie and California Suite back in the 1970s, and also picked up her Tony Award in 1990 for the Broadway play Lettice and Lovage. She competed with Claire Danes (“Homeland”), Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”) and Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”), among others.
‘The film without her would still be good with all the other actors, but it puts a stamp of quality with her in it’. The night also saw a few big upsets in the supporting actors drama category, as Ben Mendelsohn won for Bloodline and Maggie Smith won for the final season of Downton Abbey.
But it was Dame Maggie Smith, doyenne of British acting, who got special attention during Kimmel’s opening monologue.
The low ratings are in line with a steady decline in viewership for awards shows, including the Oscars ceremony earlier this year which drew its smallest audience since 2008.
“The more I learned about the real Marcia Clark. the more I had to recognize that I along with the rest of the world had been superficial and careless in my judgment”, said Paulson, accepting her first Emmy. According to Bloomberg, one of the biggest winners of the awards night was HBO’s medieval fantasy drama “Game of Thrones”, which won awards for best writing, directing and drama series. Still, she took time in her acceptance speech to note the uncomfortable resemblance of the current political scene to the fictional one in “Veep”. For the ninth time. Her character on Downton Abbey, the Dowager Countess, is one of the reasons why we tuned in every week. What is wrong with us?
