Downton’s cast and crew say their final goodbye
The final episode of Downton Abbey was watched by 6.6 million viewers, beating EastEnders in the Christmas ratings battle.

An average overnight audience of 8.6 million viewers, including those time-shifting on ITV +1, watched as Matthew Crawley (played by Dan Stevens) proposed to Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) four years ago, according to the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (Barb).
The success of the period drama’s final episode is unlikely to diminish fans’ calls for a big screen followup, despite wrapping up long-running storylines including the love life of Lady Edith.
BBC One controller Charlotte Moore said: “BBC One brought the nation together with a distinctive range of programmes on Christmas Day and eight of the top 10 most popular shows”. The final episode started at 8:45 p.m. and ran for two hours.
A Downton Abbey boss has revealed the real reason the show ended after six successful seasons.
Jacki Winstanley, Beamish’s marketing officer, said: “It was fantastic to have a scene from the very last episode of Downton Abbey filmed at Beamish”. Not a single show broke the 7 million viewer mark this year, down from the most recent peak in 2010 when three shows – all on the BBC – each attracted more than 10 million.
One person was even reduced tears on seeing her in her wedding dress: “I’ll admit I cried tears of joy when Lady Edith came down those stairs #DowntonFinale #DowntonAbbey”.

Set on New Year’s Eve 1925, this year’s Christmas edition of Downton Abbey will be the fans’ last chance to spend time with Hugh Bonneville’s Lord Grantham and the rest of the residents. The sentiment seems to be that many cast members are ready to move on, and doing something like this without a few of the iconic cast members would at this point be too depressing.
