Dozens killed in series of blasts across Baghdad

At least 13 people were killed and as many as 52 others sustained injuries late on Saturday in the vehicle bomb attack at a popular auto dealership in Sadr City, a district in northeastern Baghdad.

The deadliest blast to strike Iraq’s capital in nearly two years tore through a busy market Thursday, killing at least 60 people in an attack claimed by the Islamic State as efforts to turn back the militants on the battlefield stagnate. The bombing, claimed by IS, was one of the worst single-day attacks in Baghdad in a decade.

In a first move from proposals to action, Abadi scrapped three deputy premier positions, three ministries and a minister without portfolio, and merged four more ministries with others, his office said Sunday. The bomb was detonated shortly after dawn.

Two police officers and four hospital officials confirmed the casualty figures of 67 dead and 152 wounded.

Both officers spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Iraq is experiencing an upsurge in instability with the government struggling to contend with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Parliament’s security committee denounced the bombing, saying it “shows the ugliness and brutality” of the attackers.

But that has made it harder to stamp his authority on a country enduring war with Islamic State, chronic corruption, Kurdish separatism, personal rivalry among political leaders and a financial crisis caused by collapsing prices for oil exports.
