“Whether Warren’s political investments will pay off for the Dakota Access Pipeline remains uncertain”, Sturgis observes.
Who is opposed to the pipeline?
“Stop the pipeline, respect Native American rights and let us move forward to transform our energy systems away from fossil fuels”, he said.
Anti-pipeline momentum is continuing to build, reminiscent of the fight over the Keystone XL pipeline.
But the protests continue- because the ruling is only temporary and protesters want a permanent halt to the project. More than a dozen demonstrators were arrested in Iowa over the weekend.
One of the representatives of the Standing Rock Sioux, Jasilyn Charger, had run to Washington, D.C. from the tribe’s home in North Dakota with other young tribe members. Moreover, he said the pipeline would cross Lake Oahe, a disputed area, 90 to 115 feet below the lake.
Why are Native American groups opposed?
“We don’t know our neighbors”, said Jana Gipp, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux. In Whitefish protesters came together at Depot Park.
The intensity of battle between Energy Transfer and the Standing Rock Sioux was documented by Democracy Now! in a video that showed Native American protesters being attacked with dogs and pepper spray. “That cost is borne by tribal nations”. Both Senators Hoeven and Heitkamp have said they intend to meet with the Army Corps of Engineers.
What is the current status of the pipeline?
Ruiz, D-Palm Desert, and Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., wrote a letter to the GOP leadership of the House Natural Resources Committee requesting an oversight hearing into whether federal agencies properly consulted with Indian tribes on the Dakota Access Pipeline, a $3.8-billion, 1,172-mile pipeline that would carry oil from North Dakota to IL.
Hillary’s Health: “Panic behind the scenes at the DNC” – journalistAfter Hillary Clinton’s collapse at a 9/11 memorial event in New York City, many were left wondering whether she has strength and stamina to continue with her campaign and potentially lead the country. A U.S. District Court judge last week denied the tribe’s request for an injunction to cease construction while the case proceeds.
A federal judge ruled against the tribe on Friday, but the Corps and the Justice and Interior departments immediately said construction near the Sioux reservation would cease pending a review of the approval process this fall. The tribe has claimed the pipeline infringes on their burial grounds and will affect their water sources.
What do pipeline supporters say?
