Dozens rally in Halifax to eradicate poverty
Xi Jinping said China will continue to help developing countries through both financial assistance and human resource development in order to take part in speeding up the world poverty alleviation effectively.

“None of them can be left behind”, Xi said, addressing the Global Poverty Reduction Forum in Beijing on Friday. Fighting poverty in a sustainable manner requires providing everyone with the means to be autonomous and assert themselves as active agents throughout their own lives harnessing the potential of education, science, culture and information, she said in her message on the global Day.
It was the first developing country to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target of reducing the population living in poverty by half ahead of the 2015 deadline.
The Day was designated to promote people’s awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution worldwide, particularly in developing countries.
China has lifted more than 600 million people out of poverty in the past 30 years, accounting for about 70 percent of those brought out of poverty worldwide.
According to the World Bank, the number of people living in extreme poverty will fall below 10 percent in 2015. The poverty rate stood at 7.2 percent a year ago, markedly lower from the 73.5 percent in 1990, using the country’s poverty line of 2,300 yuan (376 US dollars) in annual income by 2010 price standards.
Over the past 60 years, China has provided 166 countries and global organizations with almost 400 billion yuan in assistance. Last month, while speaking at the UN, President Xi pledged that China will create a $2 billion fund to assist developing nations in the fight against poverty.
Ban said on Friday the United Nations welcomes significant commitments and generous proposals from Xi and looks forward to further progress in poverty relief through its partnership with China. “Therefore, on behalf of the people and government of Cambodia, I would like to deeply appreciate the people and government of People’s Republic of China for the contribution in this cause”, said the Prime Minister. The government is also working to expand PhilHealth coverage.
One of the government’s landmark anti-poverty programs is the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, which is aimed at helping those in “the poorest of the poor” to get out of poverty.
