DPRK senior party official Kim Yang Gon killed in vehicle accident
Yang-gon was one of Kim Jong-un’s top associates, whom the Korean Central News Agency described as a “trusted revolutionary comrade” who dedicated his life to finding peace with South Korea.

Kim Yang-gon, 73, was part of a high-level delegation from North Korea that helped ease a stand-off with the South in August, after an exchange of artillery fire. Rare high-level talks were held between the two countries earlier this month.
Kim had grown visibly closer to Kim Jong Un recently, appearing alongside the young leader at various farm and factory inspections and diplomatic meetings.
Kim Yang Gon visited South Korea in 2009 to pay his respects to late President Kim Dae-jung, who held the first inter-Korean summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000.
Chinese authorities have notified the South Korean Embassy that the recent media report was made “without prior permission from a local Chinese government”, the official said on the condition of anonymity, citing sensitivity of the issue.
A state funeral committee has been set up, which is chaired by top leader Kim Jong Un.
In 2013, he purged and executed his uncle Jang Song-Thaek, who was once considered the second most powerful man in the country for “anti-revolutionary crimes”. It gave no details of the accident.
Before his death, there had been no signs that Kim Yang Gon was engaged in any major factional feuding with other officials. “Most die either because they are machine-gunned, or they die in auto crashes”.
“There are nearly no cars and security for high-officials travelling in cars is extremely tight”.

The report by Seoul’s National Intelligence Service might also have been wrong given it has a mixed record of tracking developments in North Korea.
