Dr. Dre Releasing NWA Film-Inspired Album This Week, Ice Cube Says

Next month, on August 14, the F. Gary Gray-directed N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton, releases in theaters nationwide, and that might not be the only Dr.

Let’s hope this reported promise from Dre actually sticks: He’s previously scrapped entire albums at the last minute without any warning, and the Guardian reports he’s announced he’d like to work on other inspired albums which never seemed to get off the ground. Reportedly, it’s an album of material inspired by the film, which, we’ll note, was itself inspired by his time with the band. “It’s mega. It’s Dr. Dre. It’s definitely a dope (great) record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day”. It’s still unclear if the record is the rapper/producer’s long-delayed Detox.

Ice Cube was also asked about rumors of N.W.A. reuniting with Eminem on tour.

“We’ve definitely been talking about it”, he said.

“I’m working on something right now. It’s definitely, definitely possible”, he replied. Given that a rep for Dre and Eminem denied that they would be involved in an N.W.A. tour, presumably this would be the Cube + Yella + MC Ren lineup that performed at the BET Experience. Dr. Dre, however, did not appear.

At 10:17, the conversation turns to the film’s soundtrack, with Ice Cube as the point person.
