Rihanna brought the house down at Madison Square Garden on Sunday evening. Puff Daddy, who presented the award, said Drake was stuck in traffic.
None of the other performers of the night fared as well. Grande spent the first verse cycling and the second verse catching her breath. Minaj, unfortunately, didn’t sound any better.
The Chicago, Illinois native was chatting to MTV News reporter Meredith Graves behind the scenes at the Madison Square Garden prizegiving in NY, when the Formation superstar walked up to her friend and hugged him from behind.
In true Kanye fashion, the rapper ranted onstage, touching on subjects from music to his beef with Taylor Swift to violence in his hometown Chicago before he debuted his music video for “Fade”, which starred Teyana Taylor. However, he only touched on the Taylor Swift scandal once in his speech. “But 11 years later, they all still know Rihanna as the one and only Rihanna”.
Leading up to the VMAs, an art exhibit featuring the twelve celebrity mannequins from the “Famous” video were displayed as an art exhibit at a secret gallery location. Jonas’ own brother, and front man of DNCE, Joe was in one booth and model Ashley Graham was in another.
It was nearly the sweetest moment of the night. She performed a variety of her recent hits and was well-received by multiple artists at the event.
The whole show was a mess. The VMAs will air live on MTV at 9 p.m.
The “Work” singer was spotted arriving with rumored beau Drake after he declared his love for her on stage while presenting her with the highly coveted Video Vanguard award. Later in the evening, she rocked a gold sequin ensemble as she accepted three awards, including Best Female Video and Best R&B Video for “Crazy in Love”. That way we could’ve seen it all come together. This year it was awarded to Rihanna, who split up her performances throughout the night. At the same time, I don’t think it would’ve gone that well if that were the case.
Even the MTV Twitter account got into the act, tweeting, “Yes, even I thought Drake was going to propose to Rihanna at the #VMAs”.
Rihanna and Drake’s apparent post-VMAs date night came after Drake told the world that he had been “in love” with Rihanna since he was 22-years-old during the ceremony. It was a very touching moment and Rihanna had a very inspirational speech to follow.
