A dumb meme circulated nearly immediately after Rihanna was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at MTV’s Video Music Awards last night. “Thank you, Drake, for that”, Rihanna said.
The Barbados-born beauty sported a sexy sheer, fringe jumpsuit and hoop earrings while Drake opted for jeans and a black and blue printed jacket, a much more casual look from his dapper award show tuxedo. “She was shooting a music video at a restaurant called Avocado in Toronto”. Drake won best hip hop video for “Hotline Bling” and Calvin Harris won best male video for “This is What You Came For” and electronic video for “How Deep Is Your Love”. Rather than focusing on Rihanna’s one-two-three-four (!) career-spanning performances, this meme encourages women to “Get over your Chris Brown and wait for your Drake”, because of course Rihanna’s mission since leaving an abusive relationship has been to attract a “good guy”. (He was “stuck in traffic”, according to Sean “Diddy” Combs.) Drake, who has reportedly dated Rihanna on-and-off for years, said he admired her before adding, “She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22-years-old”.
Rihanna was honoured on the night with the, Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, which recognizes an artist’s entire catalogue of work. The Daily Mail also reports that Aubrih left the club together, though if they showed any kind of affection toward each other, it was not captured on camera. “You know what she was doing to me?” First, Kanye gave a 4-minute speech, which certainly surprised somebody, then later on Drake surprised everybody by kissing Rihanna on her lips, while presenting with her an award!
After wrapping up his emotional speech, Drake turned to Rihanna and opened his arms Titanic-wide and went in for a kiss, likely the moment he’d been waiting for all night – scratch that, his “entire adult life”. This year it was awarded to Rihanna, who split up her performances throughout the night, singing hits such as “Work”, “We Found Love” and “Love on the Brain”.
He concluded before breaking into song: “Tonight, we’re here to have fun!” Judging by the picture above, they’re more than just friends.
