Drake to receive key to the city from Toronto mayor on Friday

Toronto Mayor John Tory says his plans to give hometown rap star Drake, a.k.a. Drizzy, the key to the city on Friday is just the start of a long working relationship between the two. I want these moments to inspire us, as a city, and to send a real message: “Toronto can do great things”.

The presentation will take place in front of thousands of fans at Ricoh Coliseum tomorrow as part of the NBA All-Star celebrity game that Drake is coaching.

Pleased. He loves hardware. “It should make us proud of who we are and what we can achieve”, insisted Tory in the video announcement shared on Twitter.

Former Toronto Blue Jays CEO Paul Beeston will be presented with a key in the spring. He’s the official ambassador of the Toronto Raptors, literally has a night named after him and is responsible in many ways for making Toronto a world recognized city. “He deserves our city’s recognition and our pride and I’m honoured to give him the Key to the City”, Tory said in a press release. Not to mention his ode to the city, Views From the 6, which is expected to drop in April. “There are quite a few of those and we want to make sure that doesn’t happen anymore”.

Drake met with Mayor John Tory at his City Hall office on Feb. 3 to discuss his contributions and future goals for the city of Toronto
