Officials reported that people should avoid places with fast moving water.

That put this year’s rain total at 21.91 inches, which is the 10th highest in Colorado Springs history (dating back to 1872), said meteorologist Mark Wankowski of the National Weather Service in Pueblo. These strong winds and flooding made the situation risky. The residents heard flood siren sounds in the streets, according to CBS. Flooding forced the closing of Canon Avenue, Serpentine and Lover’s Lane.

Flash floods impacted entire neighborhoods. All students were sent home early.

Forecasters believe the weather will clear up shortly for southern Colorado.

Along Camp Creek near 31st Street in Colorado Springs, the waterway went from quiet with minimal water to a roaring river in a matter of seconds. Mud and debris flowed down city streets, thought to be caused by a lack of vegetation. With temperatures expected to reach 84 degrees with 40 percent precipitation, the increase of moisture and a cool front will push the thunderstorms away.
