One of the officers released had a broken leg.
A suspected Black Lives Matter supporter with a prior history of attacking law enforcement is in jail today after attempting to murder three Phoenix Police Department officers who had gathered outside a convenience store to talk. The officers all survived the crash.
“The actions taken by our officers in the immediate moments following this incident were nothing short of heroic”, police chief Yahner said.
The officers were “victims of a violent, intentional attack”, said Phoenix Police Chief Joe Yahner.
“I am outraged by this incident, ” Yahner said, according to CBS 5 News.
An ensuing fight between the driver and another officer is captured on camera with staff seen rushing out of the petrol station before the man is finally apprehended.
The incident occurred just before 2 a.m.on Tuesday at a QuikTrip gas station on Camelback Road, off Interstate 17.
Another camera angle shows the driver of the vehicle pulling up to a gas pump before backing into another area of the parking lot and shining his headlights on the officers. However, ABC15 in Arizona reports that Marc Payne has a previous record for fighting with police after a traffic stop in 1997.
His auto struck the group and came to a stop after it shattered the glass entrance to the convenience store. Both indicated that the rookie officer, who was working his first full day on the job and was seriously injured, acted heroically. An officer with 8 years of experience suffered a minor injury.
The auto plowed into two of them, breaking a sergeant’s leg and causing head injuries to an officer in his first day on the job, according to police.
Witnesses at the scene said Payne was driving fast in the parking lot and even revved his engine before plowing into the officers.
All of the officers were treated at the hospital for their injuries.
Police later told The Washington Post that a Taser was used to subdue Payne and take him into custody. No other bystanders or gas station employees were reported injured.
Suddenly, the lights on the red sedan turn on and the vehicle races across the lot at the three officers. “Our officers were targeted”.
“When someone targets a police officer it places the entire community at risk and in this particular instance in viewing the video you can see that people inside of the store in particular two QT clerks were placed at risk of harm as a effect of the crash that occurred”, said Montgomery. “But this happened here”. This happened in Phoenix. “I am so proud of them and all the men and women of the Phoenix Police Department”. Payne was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail Tuesday afternoon.
Court documents released Wednesday described Payne as a transient without community ties.
