DreamWorks Studios to part with the Walt Disney Co. next year

This year, one of Hollywood’s most influential directors is rumored to have decided not to renew his deal with Disney, and his DreamWorks Studios will probably team up with the famous company – Universal Studios.

The report said “The BFG“, based on a Roald Dahl book, will be the last released under the Disney deal, which began in 2009.

According to the report, Spielberg was a “hands on” producer in Universal’s recent Jurassic World and “he also is key on potential reboots of other Universal franchises such as Jaws and Back to the Future“.

The impending move has been the subject of speculation among Hollywood observers in part because Disney has moved away from the sort of adult dramas for which Spielberg’s production company is known.

Spielberg had this year once again proven that he is a powerful figure in the movie business by making Jurassic World, which crushed every previous box-office record.

Universal Studios and DreamWorks did not respond to request for comment. At the time, DreamWorks films were distributed by Paramount Pictures.

A spokeswoman for Disney declined to comment.

When Disney and DreamWorks announced their agreement six years ago, the companies said that Disney would market and distribute “approximately six DreamWorks films each year”. Cook was ousted soon after the deal was made, and CEO Bob Iger went forward with fully financing Disney movies.

There’s an interesting situation going down with Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks.

DreamWorks turned to Disney late in 2008 when Universal balked at its demand for more upfront money and fees from Universal’s TV distribution pact with HBO, a source close to the matter had told Reuters. Walt Disney Studios is co-producing the picture with DreamWorks.
