Drew Brees confident he’ll play Sunday

It appears that Saints quarterback Drew Brees has a good chance to play Sunday in Carolina, according to head coach Sean Payton, though it is anything but certain at this point.

The record-setting quarterback hasn’t missed time for injury since the 2005 season, when he hurt his shoulder, though he has sat out games when his teams were set in playoff seeding at the end of the season.

He bruised his right rotator cuff in New Orleans’ 26-19 loss to Tampa Bay in Week 2, but said earlier this week he has “every intention of playing”. “I have to be smart with this, so that’s what I’m doing”, Brees said, via ESPN.com. Asked by a scribe what the team would do “if you have to go with McCown”, Payton interrupted the question to say: “We’re not going to discuss hypotheticals on a Wednesday”.

What we are certain of is that Brees will test out his arm prior to Sunday’s contest to determine if, or at what level, he’s able to pass. Brees didn’t throw in Wednesday’s session. I can’t go out of my responsibilities to try to make those plays. Brees is now dealing with a shoulder injury that likely occurred on the hit after throwing that aforementioned pick. Which we have dealt with in the past with a handful of players.

Outlook: After becoming the first team in National Football League history to open a season with two straight losses while blowing a lead of 10 or more points in the fourth quarter, the Giants can’t afford to lose.

Payton also mentioned the pass rush several times in the video, noting that the Saints defense was giving rookie Jameis Winston too much time to throw. The third year pro has come a long way since his career debut against Greg hardy. If Norman continues to play like he has so far this season, that number’s only going to increase, but two games is still a small sample size.

Right now I would imagine that Brees is truly a game time decision, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all that he plays. “It may be a little in the week before we know for sure”. The Panthers defensive line hasn’t been the dominant force we’ve seen before, but it’s been okay. “The idea is just to make progress every day”, said Brees, who said he has also done strengthening exercises related to the throwing motion.

What do you like about Damian Swann and Kyle Wilson’s versatility to play safety? They had a guy named Philip Rivers they acquired in some weird draft trade with the New York Giants, invovling Eli Manning.

Meanwhile, the Saints were increasingly hopeful about the possible returns of cornerback Keenan Lewis (hip) and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (toe), who have not played yet this season. In the end, lose a lot, we the fans will cry and feel ashamed and use words like: embarrassing!
