Drew Brees Gets Guaranteed $44M in Extension With Saints

A person familiar with the matter tells The Associated Press that Henderson’s appeal is based on him using marijuana for medicinal purposes to allegedly relieve the effects of Crohn’s disease.

In essence, the Saints get Brees under contract for one additional season but by spreading the contract over five years they significantly reduce Brees’ $30 million cap hit for 2016, which was the highest for any player in National Football League history. This development comes a day after reports stated that Brees and the Saints organization had resumed talks about a contract extension that looks to keep the future Hall of Famer with the team beyond the 2016 season.

Asked by The Associated Press about Kaepernick’s decision not to stand before games when the national anthem is played, Goodell says: “I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don’t live in a flawless society”. “This is what was in the best interest of the team”.

“Both sides are very happy, certainly I am very happy”, Brees said. “I can’t think of any one player that means more to an organization or a city than Drew”. The deal also has a no-trade clause, but the final three seasons are voidable, meaning the Saints and Brees, who turns 38 in January, will have to revisit the possibility of another extension next year. “It’s been an incredible journey and I hope to continue that journey for quite a bit longer”.

“They happen in due time and they happen when they’re supposed to happen”, Brees confessed.

Saints Coach Sean Payton, meanwhile, has stayed mum on the rumored contract extension progress. He’ll have to work to bring the team back to the playoffs, though.

Brees has won exactly 100 games with the Saints – including the only Super Bowl victory in franchise history, a 31-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts after the 2009 season.

Since joining the Saints, Brees has completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 48,555 yards, 348 touchdowns and 152 interceptions during the regular season. Under the latter scenario, it would’ve been the 3rd Franchise Tag of his career, guaranteeing him $43.4 million for a single season.

Brees’ age may have been working against him when compared to younger star quarterbacks. He’s thrown for over 4,800 yards in each of the last five seasons and has thrown for over 30 touchdowns eight years in a row. Contractually, Brees will only be signed to the Saints for this season and next. And if an extension isn’t reached, he could become an unrestricted free agent next spring. But if a single player swallows up 1/4 of the cap then how can the team make the necessary roster moves needed for him to get a shot at another championship before he retires?
