Drew Brees ignites Saints to OT win over Cowboys in return

Brees became just the fifth player in National Football League history to reach 400 touchdown passes, among them Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who accomplished the feat in Week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After recording just 40 receptions for 291 yards last season, Jamaal Charles is on pace to haul in 80 catches for 906 yards. Part of the trouble was the offensive line, and Dallas’ consistent pressure on Brees paid off with a sack for DeMarcus Lawrence. The 2015 Saints are not a good football team right now, but it’s starting to look possible that they might not be awful, and maybe they are getting better. Brees completed 33-of-41 pass attempts with two touchdowns and a passer rating of 119.4.

“I thought he did real good“, Jones said, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

It could have been an ugly game for the Saints, or it could have been an ugly game for the Cowboys.

“Drew was smart enough to get it snapped it quickly”, Saints coach Sean Payton said.

While having those three veteran defenders back, at least for a partial workload, was critical for the Saints, Brees’ performance brought a sigh of relief from anxious fans. Brees has expressed optimism that he will be back this week, but it is unknown how his shoulder woes could affect his ability to stretch the field. Brees and Company would march down field to give, kicker, Zach Hocker a chance to clinch the Saints victory with a 30-yard field goal but hooked it left, hitting the left goal post, sending the game into overtime. The touchdown came on fourth down, with the game hanging in the balance, and Weeden made a great throw to Williams to keep the Cowboys’ hopes alive if only temporarily. The Saints might have won last night, but they won’t win much more if they continue to allow such a number. But a holding penalty on Brandon Carr gave the Saints new life and they went on to collect two more first downs before punting away to the Dallas 17-yard line, a big change in the field-position battle. Which is just fine for the Saints, who remain a substantial work in progress even after these Brees-led heroics.

But remember, the Buccaneers beat the Saints in New Orleans for their only win.

Joseph Randle scored for the Cowboys (2-2) on a one-yard run in the first half.

The pass rush was impressive early, but fizzled in the second half. Dunbar had three carries for 54 yards, including a 45-yard run on Dallas’ first possession.

It took just 13 seconds for Drew Brees to get 400 and for the Cowboys to get another loss.

“We play aggressive, so a few of that’s going to happen”, Jets linebacker Calvin Pace said. Brees finished a misleading 17-of-20 in the first half, but for only 115 yards – an average of 6.7 yards a completion.

Hocker’s miss at the end of regulation blunted a furious 68-yard drive by the Saints inside the final two minutes. “Tonight wasn’t ideal by any means, but we made enough plays”. There was that missed field goal.
