Drew Pomeranz: Pomeranz smoked for five runs in Sox debut

It doesn’t work for him that way.

“I don’t hit homers when I try to hit homers, ” he told reporters.

“I get so angry”. Indeed, Hanley Ramirez almost single-handedly delivered the game for the Red Sox, with a career-high three home runs and six RBIs.

“Unfortunately it was an early night for him”, manager John Farrell said.

On Wednesday, Ramirez enjoyed his first career three-homer game, and he also made a series of key defensive plays at first base.

In St. Louis, Jedd Gyorko homered for the fifth straight game off San Diego pitching, connecting twice and driving in all three RBIs to give the Cardinals a doubleheader sweep.

Castro homered in the second off Vance Worley (2-1) and hit a two-run double in the sixth. Ramirez postured toward the mound before he skulked to first base as plate umpire Stu Scheuerwater warned both dugouts. The biggest crowd of the season – 38,201 – stood and chanted Ramirez’s name for his final at-bat in the eighth. But he says he doesn’t hit four-baggers when he seeks them.

Barnes added a scoreless seventh, getting Brandon Belt on a check-swing strikeout with two on to end it, and a flawless eighth. Drew gave up a 3 run homer to Williamson and then a 2 run homer to Brown to now have the Sox lead to only 3.

If the Tuesday game between the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants served as a World Series preview, baseball fans are in for quite a treat.

Immediately after going down 8-0 in the third inning, the Giants came to the doorstep of their biggest comeback in 27 years. On a night when the starter was out early, Barnes did just what the team needed him too and as a result the official scorer gave him the win. “It was definitely a special feeling rounding the bases”. His last was the most important, stepping on the Giants’ throat after they clawed back to score seven unanswered runs.

Rizzo pulled a slider to right for a solo homer in the third.

Giants: OF Hunter Pence (strained left hamstring) had a couple of days off during a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento.

NOTES: Boston placed RHP Koji Uehara (right pectoral strain) on the 15-day disabled list after he got hurt Tuesday. The Twins have scored 10 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in 10 of their last 14 games. The Red Sox are 11-3 in July after sweeping the two-game series.

Hanley Ramirez had the game of his career Wednesday night, leading the Red Sox to an 11-7 victory with both his bat and his glove against the San Francisco Giants.

The Red Sox right-hander got Boston out of a bases-loaded jam en route to three innings pitched with zero runs on two hits and two strikeouts. Ramirez went 3 for 4 tonight with three home runs.

“It felt like it was coming out (of my hand) fine, just had some errant ones”, said Cain (1-6).

But he said one thing was certain.

“I take it one day at a time”.

The Giants played at Fenway Park for the first time since 2007. Pomeranz had made it through the first three innings looking quite strong.

The pitching once again showed us fans of the Boston Red Sox why we should be anxious about the post season if this team can make it there. “We just can’t seem to keep the ball in the ballpark”. He left with no outs and runners on first and second, but Robbie Ross Jr. came in and spared Pomeranz (5er, 8h, 2bb, 4k) of further damage.

Boston also reclaimed sole possession of first place in the American League East for the first time since June 4. The Red Sox had five homers in the game – Sandy Leon added a solo shot – after getting two in a 4-0 win Tuesday. With a chance to tie the major league record of four homers in a game, he grounded out weakly to the pitcher in his last at-bat. The two-run shot completed Ramirez’s home run hat trick. It’s been done 16 times, most recently by Josh Hamilton for Texas in 2012.

Lopez (0-1), considered one of Washington’s top prospects, allowed six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. This will be Duffey’s second career game against the Red Sox.

WASHINGTON – Bryce Harper led an offensive outburst with a towering home run into the third deck in right field as the Washington Nationals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1 on Wednesday night.

“It’s kind of been a little dream of mine”, he said. “It makes me a better player when I get hit because I get so angry”.

Ramirez also made a few good plays in the field. He dove to his right to stop a line drive in the first inning, and made a play to his right on a hard grounder from Grant Green.
