Drews Brees signs contract extension with Saints

Brees said he plans to play longer than two years, and originally hoped to sign a deal that would ensure he would be a Saint for the duration of his career.

National Football League rumors of Drew Brees joining the Dallas Cowboys or Denver Broncos should be one of the headlines if the quarterback can’t get his $100 million deal with the New Orleans Saints.

“I don’t see any reason why I can’t play at the highest level for the next five years minimum”, Brees said in June.

If anyone with the Saints is overpaid, it is Payton, a 14-18 coach the last two years making $8 million a year, not Brees.

Re-signing him was easier said than done for a Saints team that has been spinning its wheels at 7-9 in each of the past two years, stretching the salary cap to its limits.

Asked by The Associated Press about Kaepernick’s decision not to stand before games when the national anthem is played, Goodell says: “I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don’t live in a ideal society”.

In his decade in New Orleans, Brees has led the Saints to the playoffs five times – including the team’s Super Bowl XLIV victory in 2010. With Week 1 set to kick off in a couple days, both sides are facing what seems to be a firm deadline. But if a single player swallows up 1/4 of the cap then how can the team make the necessary roster moves needed for him to get a shot at another championship before he retires? Next year could be a different story, but that’s a bridge New Orleans shouldn’t mind crossing often when dealing with a player in his late-30s.

Brees’ 60,903 career passing yards rank fourth all-time in the NFL. He was released before the final season of his contract, when cutting him made more sense financially.

Now, Who Dat Nation can breathe a sigh of relief while Brees can focus totally on the task ahead, beginning with Sunday’s season opener at high noon against the Oakland Raiders at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Because of Brees’ age, the length of his contract and the total amount of guaranteed money was expected to be a sticking point in negotiations between Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and Brees’ agent, Tom Condon.

After being selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, former Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson has been waived by the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports.
