The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has booked and charged a driver who is connected to the vehicle collision that killed former Pima County Supervisor Ann Day. Inglett says a truck traveling behind Day then rear-ended her vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at Banner University Medical Center at 8:37 a.m. The driver of the other auto and the driver of the truck were both transported to Banner-UMC Trauma Center in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle that struck Day’s auto head-on was traveling in excess of 80 miles per hour, according to witnesses at the scene, CBS affiliate KOLD reported.

The 77-year-old was retired from state politics but was serving as the Pima County Supervisor. John McCain, R-Ariz., expressed condolences following the news of Day’s passing.

Members of Day’s family were not immediately available for comment.

Day was known for being moderate politically and for advocating for cancer patients’ rights to clinical trials and reforms in the HMO industry. A self-proclaimed lifelong “cowgirl from Lazy B” ranch, Ann will always be remembered for her passionate and pragmatic approach that benefited so many citizens across our state.
