The chase began at about 3:20 a.m.in the Gilroy area when CHP officers spotted a white Honda Accord speeding on northbound Highway 101 and attempted to pull over the auto, according to Lee.
A woman was pronounced dead just before 5 a.m., CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos told City News Service.
The driver then traversed several South Bay freeways.
Jeremy Cox says it appeared the driver was intentionally trying to ram other cars on the road before he lost control and crashed.
CHP officers pursued the auto on various freeways including 880, 17 and Highway 85, before the chase ended on 280.
As the driver fled from officers, he drove at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour and was swerving in and out of traffic.
The CHP vehicle also crashed at the end of the chase.
