Driver Killed, Football Players Injured in School Bus Crash in Denver

The students have been released. The three remain in the hospital with significant injuries, according to the school district.

Officials at Denver Health Medical Center they had five patients: two in critical condition, two in serious condition and one fair.

The Los Angeles Times reported that authorities involved in investigating the crash said approximately “17 to 20 passengers were taken to hospitals”.

Police spokesman John White said the female bus driver died after the bus veered off a road and crashed into a concrete wall.

“We extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone impacted by Sunday’s accident and offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of our bus driver who tragically passed away”, was written in a press release from the Adams 12 school district on Monday, Sept. 12. A crisis team was there to help students.

According to investigators, the bus driver stopped at a stop sign before driving through the intersection.

“[The driver] ran off the right side of the roadway”, said Denver Police Sgt. Mike Farr.

Students at Legacy High School in Broomfield had counselors available and were shielded from reporters Monday.

Local media reported that the bus was carrying players and coaches from Broomfield Legacy High School, who were returning from a game in California. The junior varsity game has been cancelled, however.

Police are interviewing the surviving victims to determine how the school bus crash took place and how fast the driver may have been going. Most of the students injured were released by late Sunday. “I really want to see them back at school”, said Legacy High School senior Felipe Perez. She was one of three buses travelling outbound.

“What were left with now is trying to explain why this crash occurred”, Farr said. “I was so anxious”.
