Driver Shane Unger Dies in Multi-Car Crash at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway

A 35-year-old driver died after suffering severe injuries in a crash Saturday night at Eldora Speedway, the OH dirt track owned by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.
A driver died in a wreck at an OH race track Saturday, an official with Eldora Speedway in Rossburg said. Fox Sports reports that the wreck occurred during a late restart for the second heat race of the World 100, when Unger and several other cars crashed in turn three.
Unger was 35 years old.

Slack told USA TODAY Sports in an email that Unger’s auto was equipped with a HANS device, which stops a driver’s head and neck from moving forward in a collision. It also stated that emergency crews worked quickly to help Unger into an ambulance to transport him to the hospital.

NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Tony Stewart, owner of the half-mile dirt oval, was competing at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night and, according to a team spokesman after the race, had not yet been informed of Unger’s death.
