The Bainbridge Island Police Department will take prescription medications for disposal this Saturday as part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s annual Drug Take-Back Day. The department says the effort gives residents a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of potentially unsafe controlled substances.

Pills, liquids and medication patches – the Cedar Rapids Police Department wants them all. The Drug Enforcement Agency said flushing the drugs hurts the environment and wildlife that lives in water. “Please help us properly dispose of these drugs so we can achieve our goal of having a healthier and safer community”. “They pollute a lot of things with it, so the best thing to do is get rid of it”, said resident John Atkins.

If you missed the event on Saturday officials said you can also ask your pharmacist how to dispose of them safely.

Deputies said an estimated weight would put the collection at just over a ton, or about 2,200 pounds, estimating 30-35 pounds per bag.

Officials said that people dropping off pills will not be asked any questions, and can not get into any trouble.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports 52 million people over the age of 12 have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons.

They say around 390 pounds of drugs were collected during the last event, and they think this time will be no different.
