A photograph posted on Twitter by North Yorkshire Police shows a wrecked Mini after it ploughed into railings at a junction in Tadcaster.
After a short search, police said they found him taking shelter in a nearby nativity scene.
“Was he a donkey?” asked one Twitter user, with another responding: “No, he’s an ass”.
A drunken driving suspect in one small town in the United Kingdom won’t be confused for one of the wise men.
A total of 22 arrests were made for drink and drug driving offences in less than a week in the constabulary.
But rather than do a runner, the unnamed driver hid inside a shed with a display of the famous nativity scene comprised baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Local news reports said a 55-year-old man had been charged over the incident on suspicion of drink-driving.
