Drury’s hit gives Diamondbacks win over Dodgers in 12

Kendrick hit a two-run double to give the Dodgers a 9-7 lead in the eighth inning, but in the bottom of the inning Chris Owings hit a two-run home run to tie things up again. The 24-year-old Stewart earned his first major-league victory by beating Arizona on September 7, when he gave up one run and five hits in five innings. Roberts seemed baffled by the Giants’ second-half swoon and acknowledged the series vs. San Francisco is a chance for the Dodgers to wrap up the NL West.

“We left a lot of guys on base”, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. It’s just good to see in September.

“Obviously we’re not in the hunt to win it (the division)”. “We’re going to do everything we can to beat them”.

Drury added what seemed an nearly needless insurance run by belting his 15th homer, a solo shot to left, in the fifth inning to make it 7-1.

The conclusion would come in the bottom of the 12th inning, when Paul Goldschmidt scored on Brandon Drury’s walk-off RBI single after Goldschmidt ran out a hustle double.

Early on, the Diamondbacks rolled to a 6-0 lead while Robbie Ray retired the first 14 batters he faced, eight by strikeout.

Greinke has struggled at Chase Field all season, posting a 5-4 mark and a 5.08 ERA with 80 hits and 10 homers allowed in 72 2/3 innings. His career best nine-game win streak ended. As it turns out, Drury would end the game a triple short of the cycle.

Arizona added to its lead with Chris Owings’ two-out single in the third to drive in Tuffy Gosewich.

Greinke’s mood in a well-paid but certainly unsatisfying first season in Diamondbacks … grey? silver? pewter?. might be peaking out in his choice of walk-up music. A wild pitch allowed Joc Pederson to race home, and Chase Utley doubled in Andrew Toles. “I wasn’t able to get into my groove”. “Even though we’re not a playoff team, we’re still playing the game hard and trying to win baseball games”. After the first couple of batters, I did as well as I could do. The Diamondbacks’ four-game home winning streak is the longest since July 2014, also four games.

Both teams had two runners on base in the ninth but couldn’t deliver. Before the game, the D-backs honored the University of Arizona baseball team, which finished second in the College World Series.

Bradley’s pitch to Hill on the bunt was well inside and at Hill’s hands. “Nothing more than that”, Bradley said. Maybe being a pitcher I got a little to excited.

So after giving up just two earned runs Sunday at Miami, he returned to the mound Friday at Arizona and topped it with one earned run allowed to start the Dodgers on the way to a 3-2 victory over the Diamondbacks and against an opposing starter in Zack Greinke, no less.

“There was no ill will or anything like that”. Hale said De La Rosa needs to show good velocity in simulated games before he can return. The pitch was supposed to be inside, it just missed.

The game seemed destined to point out numerous Dodgers’ flaws, but ended up illuminating some of their strengths, too. Pitcher Alex Wood, normally a starter, will be activated from the 60-day disabled list on Monday, and Roberts’ plan is to start him out of the bullpen for an inning. Wood went on the DL on May 31 and made 10 starts before that, going 1-4 with a 3.99 earned run average. “Brock has earned the opportunity for another start”, Martinez said.

“We’ve had a little bit of success against him”, Roberts said. Braden Shipley will take De La Rosa’s rotation spot.

“Everything was working for me”, Ray said. He faces Arizona, against which he faced and won on September 5 at Dodger Stadium.

The Los Angeles Dodgers rallied from six runs down, only to lose in extra innings Sunday night.

But that hasn’t stopped Greinke’s two starts against the Dodgers (and, coincidentally Maeda) over the past two weeks from having the feel of two people formerly in a relationship awkwardly running into each other.
